The southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean, has some of the most stunning beaches in Mexico. Whether you want to surf, snorkel, scuba dive, paddleboard, fish, party, go on a romantic walk, or watch whales — buying a luxury home in Los Cabos gives you access to it all.
The World’s Aquarium
Jacques Cousteau once dubbed the Sea of Cortez “the world’s aquarium,” and the abundance of marine life off the Baja Peninsula is certainly mesmerizing. Which makes snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking must-do activities. You will encounter dozens of species of tropical fish in these waters as well as a wide variety of other sea creatures: gigantic manta rays, sword-nosed marlin, sharks, groupers, sea turtles, even whales.
Why Los Cabos Is a Beach Paradise
Los Cabos is home to dozens of great beaches. Some are perfect for swimming, with crystal-clear water and waves gentle enough for even the smallest swimmers. Others are perfect for water sports, snorkeling, and scuba diving thanks to exotic rock formations, coves, and surf breaks.
Some Los Cabos beaches have received Blue Flag certification from the Foundation for Environmental Education. This coveted ecological distinction is awarded to beaches, marinas, and operators of sustainable tourism who, according to Blue Flag, must meet “a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria” in order to qualify for the certification.
Whether you are interested in surf breaks, burgers, beer, volcanic life formations, or swimming with tropical fish, there’s a beach or two in Los Cabos for you.
Medano Beach (Playa el Médano)
Close to town, Medano Beach (Dune Beach) is the main swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas and the beach most popular with visitors. It begins at the east side of the harbor and extends along Cabo San Lucas Bay all the way to Villa del Palmar. Its soft sand, clear waters, and calm waves make it a great place to spend hours swimming or playing water sports. If you choose a home in oceanside Cabo San Lucas, you will enjoy easy access to this family-friendly beach full of worry-free amenities.
Chileno Beach (Playa Chileno)
Although Medano Beach can get crowded, Chileno Beach — just off the Tourist Corridor and easily reachable by bus or cab — is more low-key. Chileno Beach is great for snorkeling because of its calm waters and a ban on motorsports to protect the marine life. You will find lobsters, sea urchins, turtles, and stingrays. This Blue Flag–certified beach may not have all the luxuries of Medano Beach, but it does have public restrooms, umbrellas for rent, palm-tree shade, and plenty of parking, and it’s a favorite with the locals.
Palmilla Beach (Playa Palmilla)
Beautiful and family-friendly Playa Palmilla in the Tourist Corridor has a protected cove to snorkel in and very peaceful waters. You need a car to get to it. Although it has fewer vendors and eateries than most beaches around San Jose del Cabo, Playa Palmilla offers enough amenities to make you comfortable, including palapas and umbrella rentals. And it’s perfect for enjoying a walk or a picnic, kayaking or fishing, and, above all, swimming. In fact, the swimming conditions are so good that the annual Ironman Los Cabos 70.3 half-triathlon is held here. Playa Palmilla is also Blue Flag–certified.
Cannery Beaches
Coral Negro Beach and Balconcito Beach, together known as the Cannery Beaches, are across the channel from Medano Beach, just outside the Cabo Marina before you reach Land’s End in Cabo San Lucas. They are famous for their massive boulders, which you can sit on or use for shade. With few vendors, the Cannery Beaches aren’t very crowded.
They get their name from the fact that this stretch of coastline was the site of the old Cabo San Lucas tuna cannery. Although the cannery is long gone, the building that housed it still stands, a reminder of Cabo’s past before the tourist boom.
Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor)
Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach are near Land’s End at the southernmost point of the peninsula. Accessible only by water, the easiest way to reach them is by water taxi from Medano Beach.
Lover’s Beach is the last beach on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula before it meets the Pacific Ocean. The beach offers safe swimming and very good conditions for snorkeling. Lovers come here; it is one of the most popular destinations in Los Cabos for romantic walks and wedding photoshoots. Nearby Divorce Beach is accessible through a break in the rocks on the Pacific side. Don’t try swimming here; the strong waves and rip currents make that inadvisable.
Neither beach has any vendors or services, so pack accordingly. From both beaches you can see the famous Los Cabos Arch, sometimes with colonies of sea lions sunbathing on the rocks.
